Thatch is the layer of grass clippings that is deep into the lawn. It is usually between the actual grass and the soil. This can build up over time and needs to be dethatched from time to time. Thatch is composed of dead and living roots, leaves and stems on the ground level.
A thick thatch of over 1/2" can harm the lawn and leave it more prone to pests, disease, and extreme temperatures. However, thatching needs to be done by a professional. As this is a process that can harm the lawn if not done properly and at the right time.
You should dethatch a lawn in mid-summer, but not too late. In the cooler temperatures, Bermuda grass is vulnerable and this could harm the lawn rather than help it.
Try to not water more frequently than the lawn needs. This will reduce the natural production of thatch. When you do decide to dethatch ensure the soil is moist but not wet or too dry.
Limit Pesticides Try to limit your use of pesticides. Pesticides are great but can harm the Earthworm population which is good for your lawn as well as other populations that are there doing more good than harm.
Dethatching helps keep your lawn healthy and green for days to come. DeThatching should be done when the Bermuda grass has established a good rooting system to not harm the lawn. During the time of new growth do not dethatch the lawn or aerate it. But, wait and allow it to grow. Water frequently in short bursts to not wash away the new plants. And, keep an eye on the weather.
When to plant is determined by the temperature more than anything for the desert grasses. And, when the plants will start emerging will be determined by the weather as well, should you have an established lawn.
Once the lawn is established you need to water deeply. This prevents thatch and encourages good growth. This means that you will need to leave the water on longer so it can reach the depths of 8-10 inches. To know if you have done this, take a screwdriver or other pointy object and push it into the ground to see the depth of moisture.
